Melissa Rivers Scattered Joan Rivers' Ashes on Vacation

August 2024 · 2 minute read

It’ll be a family reunion every year. Just days before the first anniversary of Joan Rivers’ death, Melissa Rivers reveals where she scattered her mother’s ashes last month.

Melissa, 47, told Entertainment Tonight on Tuesday, Sept. 1, that she and her son, 14-year-old Cooper, went on their annual family vacation to Wyoming last month, and that’s where they decided to sprinkle some of her comedian mother’s remains.

“[It was the first one] without my mom, and scattered some of her ashes there so we can still be together every August as a family,” she told ET.

As for how she’ll remember Joan on the one year anniversary of her death on Friday, Sept. 4? “Cooper and I talk a lot about what would be the best way to honor her legacy, and the best way to honor her legacy is to be okay,” the new Fashion Police panelist said, later admitting that she’s “kind of a disaster this week."

For the mother and son, being okay means just having a normal day on Friday. “I’m just going to have a glass of wine,” Melissa revealed. “He’s going to go to school, I’m going to go to work and come home and light a candle.”

Joan, who was known for her brash style of comedy and her critiques of celebs’ outfits on Fashion Police, died at age 81 on Sept. 4, 2014, from complications during a routine surgical procedure on her vocal cords. Melissa filed a multimillion dollar lawsuit in January against the New York clinic and the doctors who operated on her mother, claiming gross medical malpractice.
